Crowley’s Rites of Eleusis
“Crowley’s Rites of Eleusis: A Different Mystery Altogether” by Jon Sewell and Melissa Holm

The Eleusinian Mysteries were initiatory ceremonies held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based at Eleusis in ancient Greece. Of all the mysteries celebrated in ancient times, these were held to be the ones of greatest importance. These secret rites, ceremonies, and beliefs were preserved for thousands of years for the men and women of all classes who attended, and arguably, represented the quintessential Mystery experience of what Aleister Crowley would later label the “Old Aeon”.

Drawing from this idea, Crowley developed his own version for the “New Aeon”.  His Rites of Eleusis are a series of seven plays, each centered on one of the classical planets of antiquity They present a study of Kabbalistic, astrological, and alchemical relationships illustrated through theatrical ritual presentations.  Designed to draw attention and interest in the A.:A..:, they were dramatically performed by Aleister Crowley, Leila Waddell, and Victor Neuburg in October and November of 1910, at Caxton Hall, London to, shall we say, “mixed reviews”.  The Rites were not performed again for 70 years, long past their author’s death and the near extinction of O.T.O.

The re-emergence of O.T.O. in the 1970s corresponded with the emergence of Neo-Paganism in California.  Local O.T.O. bodies often were co-mingled with British Trad derived covens by virtue of a shared interest in magickal practices.  Members studying at U.C. Berkley at the time described for us the process through which feminism was introduced into BTW and, by extension, California O.T.O.  By the 1980s, these groups were seeking a mode of expression that would result in the raising of community energy and greater cohesion.  The Rites were re-discovered in a rare out-of-print supplement to the Equinox (Crowley) and this quickly became the focal point for years of community growth and magickal exploration.

Join us as we dig a little deeper into this story and explore the ways that Crowley’s Rites of Eleusis have evolved through the last 35 years.
